Brave Train Staff Member Receives Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Multiple Knife Incident on High-Speed Service
A brave train staff member who intervened to protect passengers during a multiple knife incident on a high-speed train has sustained critical injuries, authorities stated on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Incident
CCTV footage allegedly shows the employee attempting to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in custody for questioning. Authorities announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Crisis Reaction and Consequences
The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have now been released from medical care.
A bystander recorded the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he confronted police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by trained personnel,” stated a senior law enforcement officer.
Union Response and Calls for Action
Train unions were swift to commend employees and call for increased measures. A union official said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, train companies and police to guarantee that we have the strongest available assistance, resources and effective procedures in operation”.
A different association representative encouraged the rail company and government “to act swiftly to review security, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Driver Commended for Quick Action
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He did not halt the train in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” explained a union official.
Additional Information
Police stated they received the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness recounted at first thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but soon understood from individuals' faces that it was serious.
Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the event was a terrorist attack and have requested the community to come forward with any additional details.
Train operations on the affected route are expected to experience delays until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where possible.
Individuals with information that could help the inquiry are asked to reach authorities by sending a message a specific number with a reference code.
