Trans director Sam Feder's recent documentary "Heightened Scrutiny" presents a moving two-part viewpoint – both an emotional profile of a prominent trans advocate and a sharp analysis of media coverage surrounding transgender existence.

Judicial Battle at the Highest Court

The film traces ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gears up for legal presentations in the significant Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle happened in late 2024, with the court ultimately deciding in support of Tennessee's argument, practically allowing bans on medical transition for trans minors to stay in effect across numerous US states.

We created Heightened Scrutiny in merely 16 months, stated Feder during a discussion. In comparison, my previous film Disclosure took me five years, so this was quite rushed. Our goal was to generate dialogue so people would know more about the case.

Human Story Amid Political Struggle

Although Feder offers a comprehensive critique of how major publications have disseminated anti-trans talking points, the film's greatest accomplishment may be its captivating depiction of Strangio. Typically a reserved attorney in public appearances, Strangio shows his vulnerability throughout the production.

This represented a substantial challenge, to share aspects of my life to a camera lens that I had strived to keep confidential, explained Strangio. Sam explained he wanted the next generation to know that we struggled, to see what was done in support of these struggles for our fundamental rights.

Diverse Perspectives in the Struggle

To enhance Strangio's account, Feder incorporates numerous transgender voices, such as prominent figures from media and entertainment. This production also includes viewpoints from cisgender supporters who examine how respected organizations have participated to damaging reporting of transgender people.

The experience of trans minors key to the court battle is shown through a impressive 12-year-old student named Mila. Viewers observe her speaking out for her community at a educational meeting, with subsequent moments showing her speaking for trans rights outside the highest court.

Personal Scenes Beyond the Legal Battle

This film also features touching moments where Feder steps outside the constant legal struggle, including sequences of Strangio vacationing in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring verses from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Prophecy."

This ink scene is among my most cherished sections in the movie, shared Strangio. Getting inked is practically like a meditative process for me, to be fully present in my body and to think of it as a vessel for things that are meaningful to me.

Body Identity and Portrayal

The filmmaker's focus to lovingly capturing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection emphasizes that Heightened Scrutiny is essentially about trans physical selves – not only those of youth who experience denial of their ability to live truly in their own bodies, but also the physical forms of the many participants who appear in the film.

I make films with a purpose, and part of that is selecting people who are exceptional and articulate enough to sustain the camera, stated Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my response is anything that makes you feel confident. This is crucial to me – as trans people, we have difficulties so much with our image.

Legacy and Hope

A key factor that makes Feder's films shine is his obvious ability for making his transgender interviewees feel comfortable, acknowledged and appreciated. This methodology creates authentic chemistry between Feder and Strangio, allowing the filmmaker to achieve his aim of presenting Strangio as a multifaceted person and leaving a record for future generations of how determinedly he and fellow activists have campaigned for trans liberties.

I don't want people to find themselves in a situation of incessant discouragement because of what the law is failing to provide us, shared Strangio. I want to be in a process of using the law to minimize harm, but not to transform it into some kind of pathway for our freedom possibilities. The government is not going to be the mirror through which we view ourselves. We are that reflection, and it's extremely crucial that we continue having that dialogue in addition to discussions about pushing against these laws and approaches.
