{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident happened on the third rotation when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"On lap three, marshals were informed and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was displayed in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
